Album Review #6: BURQA BOYZ - أسلحة ضخ جاف حدب

I’ve always been a fan of sampling. It opens up a whole world of opportunities when it comes to defining a sound. It allows the listener to have a wide range of different nosies going throughout the piece. From using various sample packs with pads and drum breaks, to sampling random bird calls, it allows the composer to use any sound to their disposal.

Burqa Boyz’ ARMS PUMPING/DRY ******* is what I would call a mastercl*** in sampling.

For a bit of background, or lack thereof, Burqa Boyz are a very enigmatic group. They have only released two albums as of 2023, along with a sudden recent announcement for a single coming out this year. Their first album, Miami Arab Emirates was released in 2012, and contains a lot of experimental sounds with a lot of overdriven noise. Arms Pumping/Dry ******* was released in 2017, five years after their debut. Nothing is known about the people behind Burqa Boyz, all that is known, at least from my research is that they release their music under the label Ormolyka.

While at first glance this album is all over the place, bouncing between different rhythm patterns and melodies while also referencing back to older ones that were performed earlier in the piece. However, it still manages to keep a continuous groove going. I was constantly wondering where the album would go next, and it would always surprise me with the next sample that they would use.

From bed springs to police sirens, to the “dayyyyym” vine sound effect, this mixtape contains so many unique samples in such a creative way and honestly deserves a lot more recognition and praise.
